School Music Programs

Everything parents and schools need — instruments, starter packs, private lessons, ensembles and expert support to help your child thrive in their school music program.

Understanding the program

What is a School Music Program?

School music programs give students the opportunity to learn a band or orchestral instrument as part of their school curriculum — typically starting in Year 4 or 5 and continuing through high school.

In Queensland, most primary and secondary schools run a band or ensemble program where students are assigned or choose a woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instrument. These programs are run by school music teachers and often culminate in performances, eisteddfods, and competitions.

Students typically have one group rehearsal per week at school, and are expected to practise at home. Many families also choose to supplement school learning with private lessons to help their child progress faster and build stronger technique.

At Australian Academy of Music, we’ve been supporting school music students across Brisbane for decades — from helping families choose the right instrument, to providing lessons, repairs, and all the accessories they need.

Typical program structure
  • Starts in Year 4 or 5 at most Queensland schools
  • Students assigned or choose an instrument
  • Weekly group rehearsals at school
  • Home practice expected (15–30 min/day)
  • Performances each term or semester
  • Optional AMEB exam pathways available
  • Continues through primary and into high school
