Help Choosing an Instrument

Help Choosing an Instrument

Choosing a first instrument can be confusing. Australian Academy of Music can help you choose an instrument that suits the student’s age, size, goals, school requirements and budget. Our Brendale team is happy to talk through the options before you buy or rent.

Choosing for a Beginner

For complete beginners, the most important factors are usually the student’s genuine interest in the instrument, their age and physical size, and a realistic budget. Starting on the right instrument makes a big difference to early progress and enjoyment.

  • Younger children often do well starting with piano, ukulele or violin
  • Older beginners have more options and can generally start on most instruments
  • A quality beginner instrument does not need to be expensive — our team can point you toward reliable options at different price points

Choosing for School Band

If your child is joining a school band program, their school will usually specify which instruments are available. Common school band instruments include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello and percussion.

If you are unsure which instrument to choose within the school’s options, our team can help you consider factors like physical suitability, availability and cost.

Choosing for Lessons

If you are starting lessons at Australian Academy of Music, our teachers can also advise on instrument choice during an initial enquiry. We can match you with a teacher and help you find a suitable instrument at the same time.

Buy vs Rent

For some instruments and situations, renting before buying can be a sensible approach — particularly for younger students or families who are not yet sure the instrument is the right fit. Ask our team about rental options for selected instruments.

Accessories and Books

Most instruments require some accessories to get started — reeds, strings, a case, a stand or a method book. Our team can help you identify what you need so you are ready to play from day one.
