Where Do I Start?
For complete beginners, the most important factors are the student's genuine interest, their age and physical size, and a realistic budget. Starting on the right instrument makes a big difference to early progress and enjoyment.
Younger children often do well starting with piano, ukulele or violin — instruments that are well-suited to small hands and short attention spans. Older beginners have more options and can generally start on most instruments.
A quality beginner instrument doesn't need to be expensive. Our team can point you toward reliable options at different price points — instruments we've tested ourselves and would recommend to our own students.
The best way to choose is to come into our Brendale showroom and try a few options in person. Our team will talk you through what suits the student's age, size and goals — without any pressure to buy on the spot.
- Age 4–6: Piano, ukulele, violin (1/8 size)
- Age 7–10: Piano, guitar, ukulele, violin, cello, flute, recorder
- Age 10+: Most instruments, including brass and saxophone
- Adults: Any instrument — it's never too late to start
- Physical size matters for brass, strings and woodwind
- Student interest is the single most important factor
Choosing for School Band
If your child is joining a school band program, their school will usually specify which instruments are available. We can help you choose within those options.
Common school band instruments include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello and percussion. If you're unsure which to choose from the school's list, our team can help you consider physical suitability, availability and cost.
We also stock and rent all major school band instruments and can have everything ready — including accessories and method books — before your child's first rehearsal.

Should I Buy or Rent?
For some instruments and situations, renting before buying is a sensible approach — particularly for younger students or families who aren't yet sure the instrument is the right fit.
