Buying Your First Ukulele

There are several types of ukuleles—soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. Beginners typically start with soprano or concert ukuleles due to their size and affordability.

Tips:

  • Look for good brands like Kala, Mahalo, or Lanikai

  • Choose a model with geared tuners for easy tuning

  • Visit our store to try a few sizes and styles in person

  • Monthly rental plans

Must-Have Ukulele Accessories

To get started, you’ll need:

  • Electronic tuner (clip-on recommended)

  • Gig bag or hard case

  • Felt or plastic picks (optional)

  • Music stand (for practice)

  • Cleaning cloth

All of these are available in-store and online.

  • Padded gig bags are perfect for school or travel

Easy Songs to Start With

You’ll be amazed how quickly you can play real music! Start with:

  • “You Are My Sunshine” – Traditional

  • “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” – Israel Kamakawiwoʻole

  • “I’m Yours” – Jason Mraz

  • “Riptide” – Vance Joy

Most songs only use 3–4 simple chords like C, F, G, and Am.

AMEB Ukulele Exams

The AMEB Contemporary Popular Music syllabus includes ukulele as part of its performance pathway. These exams give structure and motivation as you progress.

First exam (Preliminary or Grade 1):

  • Perform 3 pieces from the AMEB ukulele book

  • Show simple strumming and chord transitions

  • Answer a few questions about rhythm and technique

  • Optional aural tests and improvisation
